Eco Organic Kitchen Composter

 dsc04698.JPGdsc04689.JPGdsc04696.JPG

A 20L system big enough for a household of 5 people, comes complete with a lid, drainage bucket, tap, instruction manual, and a 1kg bag of Eco Organic Bokashi.

The Eco Organic Bokashi, made with OMRI organic certified, SCD EM (Efficient Microbes) infused into bran, will prevent the lost of any energy in what ever food source you place in the system (never put food in that is already starting to rot or going off).

The whole process in the system is a fermentation process and what ever waste gets place in the system, will not loose its physical structure.  No measurable methane gasses will be released during the thus this system is complete Eco friendly and ‘green”.  When the Eco Bokashi Kitchen Composter is full, one needs to let it stand for a further 7 days to allow the waste added last, to be properly fermented.  In order to let it breakdown, we need to bury the contents of the system, either next to the roots of trees, or in an area where you are planning to plant some new plants soon.  Dig a trench of about 20 cm to 30 cm, place the contents of the system in the trench, and mix some soil into it with a garden fork, now you can fill the trench with soul.  Once buried in the soil, the soil microbes assist in breaking it down into the best compost known to man.  Weather depending, the fermented waste will break down completely within 7 to 21 days, the warmer the faster the breakdown.

Now you are ready to plant straight on top of the buried food waste and all that preserved energy will be available to the new plants.  You will notice a drastic difference in the growth of your plants planted directly on top of it comparing to those that are just being fed compost and normal fertilizers.

From Jenny’s Bokashi Blog

Here on the blog we get a lot of visits from people looking for ideas for balcony gardens — and how they can use Bokashi in an urban environment where there’s not always a garden handy.

How about starting a “soil factory” on your balcony? Hardly needs any space and you can keep your fermented Bokashi food waste cycling through it year round if you live in a halfway decent climate. (Which ours is not unfortunately, but thank god for cellars!)

You’ll end up with a steady supply of fantastically rich soil. If you’re growing anything at all on your balcony it will be a godsend, you’ll notice the difference in the vitality of your plants immediately if you start growing them in Bokashi-soil.

Your friends and neighbours are sure to want some too, and it’s not hard to fill a plastic bag with fresh, healthy “supersoil” and drop it in to a neighbour. Or bring to a work colleague, to your allotment garden, or topdress the plants in the gardens around your apartment buildings. Guerilla gardening anyone?

Check the following post for instructions how to do it, it’s dead easy I promise, and if you experiment a bit you’ll come up with something that works really well for you.

And if you don’t have a balcony? Then try the cellar! Maybe you can get together with some of your neighbours and start a soil factory in the basement, perhaps even alongside the other recycling stations for paper and glass and stuff. You can reassure them there won’t be any smell or mess, after all you’re just dealing with a bunch of plastic boxes and good old natural soil. And there won’t be any problems with rats, they don’t actually like the stuff as it is too acidic for them. And anyhow, the boxes are sealed.

And the real bonus of all this is less rubbish to cart around. You don’t have to drag so many rubbish bags down to the big bin, and there’s less stuff for the council to cart away. And if everyone did it in your building you’d have a much nicer smelling basement. Guaranteed!

And who knows, maybe even a nice-looking flower garden instead!

  • ALL kitchen refuse can be put into the bokashi system, even fish, meat, cheese, and bones.
  • There is no odor as there is no oxygen to react with the scraps and the lid on the bucket is air-tight.
  • Since you are not putting the raw kitchen refuse into a compost making system outdoors, you don’t have to worry about bugs, or animals digging up the refuse.  The finished product that you ultimately put into your garden or compost mixture is already pickled so it doesn’t attract bugs or animals.
  • The bokashi method is much faster.  The resulting product is ready within two weeks of when you finish filling the bucket.
  • The liquid resulting from the process is excellent for your plants when mixed with water in a 100:1 ratio.
  • You reduce the amount of refuse you put in the local landfills.  This not only helps the landfills, but it can save you money.
  • As with a wormery, you can use the bokashi mix to ferment dog feces, but you must first mix the feces with other organic matter.  Do this separately from the bokashi you will be using for your vegetable garden. After it has fermented, bury it under about 8 inches of soil in your ornamental garden.
  • If you have a cat litter box, the addition of a little of the bokashi  mixture to the cat litter each week will reduce the odors and is not harmful to the cats.  The resulting litter can be processed the same way as dog feces and, after it is fermented, it can be buried in your ornamental garden.
  • Your bokashi mixture will last for many years if kept in a dry place out of direct sunlight.

Bokashi is a centuries-old Japanese method of recycling household food waste into all-natural compost.  By employing a special culture of yeast and other microorganisms, bokashi is a compact, odourless process that takes only days instead of weeks or months.

Conventional composting uses oxygen-fed organisms to break down organic matter.  In contrast, bokashi uses a special mix of organisms that thrive without oxygen to ferment the food scraps.  The process is similar to that of wine or pickle making.  It takes place in a sealed container and it’s practically odourless, making it suitable for small dwellings.

Fermentation and Bokashi

Conventional composting relies on oxygen-fed organisms to break down organic material.  Bokashi uses different kinds of microbes that thrive without oxygen.  They decompose organic matter through an anaerobic process.  It’s basic fermentation, the same process that gives us wine and pickles.

Advantages of Bokashi Compost

Bokashi works fast - in a matter of days, not months.  And, when properly managed, bokashi is practically odourless.  That makes it ideal for apartments and large residential dwellings alike.

Bokashi is also highly scalable.  Larger buckets can be fitted with wheels to ease transportation logistics.  For restaurants or schools, prisons and other institutions, bokashi has potential as a speedier, more space-efficient way to recycle large volumes of kitchen waste into valuable compost.

How to Do Bokashi Compost

Making bokashi compost is simple.  You need a couple of big containers with tight-fitting lids (to keep the oxygen out), some kitchen scraps, and Eco Organics Bokashi.  Eco Organics Bokashi contains wheat bran, molasses, and SCD Food-grade Probiotics (EM or Efficient Microbes) - the efficient microorganisms that drive the process.

Note that because we use food-grade Probiotics / EM, it is perfectly save as a additive (2%-4%) in your pet’s food.  Assist in general health, better digestion, and dog poop that does not smell as strong as the pro-biotic will suppress pathogens and inoculate ammonia  and methane gases.  Thus it will also contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment.

Email us for more details on how to order

  • Order your Eco Organic Bokashi bran (food grade) now.
  •  We have applied for registration with the Dept of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry as an animal husbandry probiotic to be added with the animal’s food.  We have seen great results during our trials adding Eco Organic Bokashi to the feed of horses, cows, chickens, sheep, dogs and cats, etc.
  • Add a hanful of Eco Organic Bokashi to your cat litter on a weekly basis.  You just need to remove the droppings.  Animal Welfare in Stellenbosch only changes their cat litter once a month now.  The microbes take care of all odours and kills of all the pathogens in the litter.
  • Add 2 hands of bokashi to your outside compost heap everytime that you add a new layer.  Gently spray some water over it and leave.  You’ll see a drastic change in your compost heap within days.
  • Bad odours in or around the house. Mist spray some moisture over the area where the smells are coming from anddust some Eco Organics Bokashi over it, or just dust the dog’s poop with it and see a difference overnight.
  • Make mudballs with Eco Organic Bokashi and some Vermicast (earthworm poo) and drop it into your koi pond, dam or water future.  Within a few days the water will be clear, and there will be no measurable ammonia levels present.
